Metropolis Class Discussion

Metropolis | Facts & Summary | Britannica

My Ideas & Observations:

  • Freder serves as the "Mediator" between the Head, Hand, and Heart (the heart being the mediator)
  • Freder can transition between worlds, revealing to him the horros of the underground world, which motivates him to be the mediator.
  • Maria serves as the hand, because she cannot move between both worlds like Freder, yet she guides him to bringing equality between the social classes.
  • Maria spoke with the working men in the chambers, telling them the story of the Babel. She inspires them to bring equality amongst everyone and explains how, giving them hope .... which is how she guided Freder to know how to bring everyone together.
  • Rotwang was another intresting character along with Maria --- he played the cliche role of the mad scientist with a devious plan
    • Rotwang had a strong desire to get back at Joh, becuase he was in love with Hel, Joh's wife
    • Hel passed away so Rotwang tried to make a robotic clogne of her; but, before Rotwang made Hel, he created a plan to get back at Joh.
    • He wanted to attack Joh, kill Freder, and leave Joh with nothing while Rotwang get's to have a robotic clogne of Hel
What I learned during the discussion:
  • There was a lot of religious symbolism throughout the film
    • Such as a connection between Maria and Saint Mary; this showed when Mary guided the children to the Garden and reminded the privledged men that they are all brothers.
  • The Legend of The Tower of Babel tells audiences how the underground workers and the skyscrapers do not speak the same language, they have a very difficult time understanding eachother
  • The ticking clock symbolises how the underground workers moved/operated the machine
  • The end of the film protrayed the gender inequalities during the 20's. When they dressed Maria in innapropriate clothing and made her dance around for men demonstrated the patriarchal influence of men.
