Ghost In The Shell Essay

Thesis: Asimov’s rules no longer apply to individuals that are part human and part robot because these hybrid creatures gained the ability to make humane rational decisions.

  • Mira, a half human and half robot, receives her order from Chief Daisuke Aramaki

  • While Killian was listening in on a conference, an attack broke out within the meeting room so Killian immediately involved herself, shooting the geisha-bots, which went against Aramaki’s orders

  • After Killian disobeyed Aramaki’s orders, they had a meeting with the section 9 board where they learned that the geisha-bots were hacked by an outside source to attack, so Killian’s decision to jump in and save the Hanka Robots was the correct decision. Aramaki spoke with Killian alone after the meeting regarding her decision to jump in and informed Killian that she still has her ghost in the shell. This proves that although Killian is expected to obey Aramaki according to Issac Asimov’s rules, she made the correct decision as The Major to save the robots from the hacked geisha-bots.

  • Once The Major and Batou get fixed from their attacks, they learn that the hackers next target is Ouelet.
    • He hacked into two men and ordered them to crash into Oulet’s car, however this didn’t kill her.
    • The Major and her team arrive on scene and The Major begins attacking Lee (one of the men) until Bantou stops her
    • Section 9 begins interrogating Lee after his connection to the hacker diminishes
    • Section 9 learns that the hacker messed with Lee’s memories.
    • The hacker then begins to communicate with section 9 through Lee informing them his name is Kuze and he was a test subject of section 9, just like Mira was
    • Kuze was a failed experiment and therefore labeled as a “freak”, he claims that Hanka took over his life and then abandoned him when he was no longer useful
    • The Major confronts Ouelet to confirm the truth and learns that there were 98 failed test subjects before their first successful one, which was The Major
    • Cutter then orders Ouelet to kill The Major because she has become a liability, instead Ouelet gives The Major an address to find these failed test subjects.
    • Once Cutter learned Ouelet disobeyed him, he kills her and claims to the Prime Minister that is was The Major, so the Prime Minister will order Aramaki to terminate her

Antithesis: Asimov’s rules do still apply to individuals that are part human and part robot because it keeps the robots from using their power to produce danger.

  • Cutter got extremely angry with Aramaki allowing The Major to do the deep-dive investigation to find the hacker

  • The Major deep-dived in the geisha-bots AI to try and track where the hackers are located, the information within the geisha-bots directed them to a nightclub

  • When The Major and Batou first arrived at the nightclub, two men locked The Major into a room expecting her to dance, which blocked her signal with Batou causing her to attack these men

  • A huge shooting broke out where Batou had to be involved, they shot all the “goons” and then ran into a room that contained a trap of a bomb in the room. When this bomb went off it damaged The Major’s robotic body and caused Batou to go blind

Notes from Ghost in the Shell:

  • Hanka Robotics Corporation is the best company in developing humans with cybernetic abilities

  • Hanka Robotics Co. created the first robot that operated with a human brain, Mira Killian

  • Killian was brought in after an accident and they placed her brain inside a cyborg with more strength and ability

  • One year after Killian was developed, she became The Major of the section 9 anti-terrorist group
